SOUND DESIGN LAB

Sound + Creative Technology

Every student starts with the same melody. No two students end in the same place.

Sound Design Lab is a six-week, hands-on audio Lab that teaches students how creative decisions can completely transform sound. Beginning with the same simple melody, students experiment with effects, rhythm, tempo, texture, and environmental audio to create something uniquely their own—learning how sound shapes emotion while developing an individual sonic identity.

WHAT STUDENTS DO

Students begin from a shared foundation and progressively transform it through experimentation:

Listen — Explore how changes in sound can alter mood, energy, space, and emotion.
Manipulate — Experiment with reverb, distortion, delay, filters, and other effects.
Build — Create drum patterns and explore how rhythm changes the identity of a piece.
Transform — Shift tempo and energy to make the same melody feel completely different.
Record — Capture everyday sounds like footsteps, voices, claps, and objects and turn them into musical textures.
Design — Combine their choices into a finished piece with its own distinct sonic identity.

WHAT THEY MAKE

Every student creates:

An original sound design built from a shared melody
Multiple variations exploring different moods and creative approaches
Original textures created from recorded environmental sounds
A finished track presented in a final group showcase

The final reveal lets students hear every project back-to-back: the exact same starting point transformed into completely different creative outcomes.

WHAT THEY LEARN

Sound Design Lab uses audio as a playground for both creative and technical experimentation:

Sound Design + Effects
Students learn how tools like reverb, distortion, delay, filters, and EQ can change the space, intensity, clarity, and emotion of a sound.

Rhythm + Tempo
Students create drum patterns and manipulate tempo to explore how rhythm and speed can completely change the character and energy of the same musical idea.

Recording + Sonic Experimentation
Students discover that sound can come from anywhere—recording ordinary objects, voices, footsteps, and other environmental sounds and transforming them into percussion and texture.

Creative Decision-Making
Because everyone starts with the same material, students can clearly see—and hear—how individual choices create individual results. The emphasis isn't simply on learning software; it's on learning to make intentional creative decisions.

CAREER PATHWAYS

Sound Design Lab introduces students to careers where audio, storytelling, music, and technology intersect, including:

Sound Designer • Music Producer • Audio Engineer • Content Creator

PROFESSIONAL MENTORSHIP

Producers, sound designers, audio engineers, and other working creatives can join the Lab to demonstrate how they use sound to create emotion and tell stories across music, film, television, games, and digital media. Students can share their work, receive professional feedback, and see how the creative experiments they're making connect to real careers in audio.

THE EXPERIENCE

WEEK 1 — LISTEN
Begin with the shared melody and discover how sound can communicate emotion.

WEEK 2 — SHAPE
Experiment with effects to create calm, intense, spacious, distorted, and unexpected versions of the same material.

WEEK 3 — BUILD
Create different drum patterns and discover how rhythm gives sound its identity.

WEEK 4 — TRANSFORM
Manipulate tempo and energy to change how the piece feels.

WEEK 5 — RECORD
Capture sounds from the surrounding environment and transform them into original percussion and textures.

WEEK 6 — SHARE
Complete each piece and play every student's work back-to-back—revealing how one shared melody became an entirely different creation in every student's hands.

CREATIVITY ISN'T JUST WHAT YOU START WITH.

IT'S WHAT YOU DO WITH IT.
