Music Production + Cultural Exploration
Students take sounds from the past and transform them into something entirely new.
Sampling & Remix Lab is a six-week, hands-on music production Lab where students explore how producers build new music from existing sounds. Working with everything from soul, jazz, salsa, African music, classical compositions, and film soundtracks, students learn the fundamentals of sampling and digital production while discovering how music evolves across cultures, genres, and generations.
WHAT STUDENTS DO
Students learn the creative process behind sampling and remixing while developing their own musical voice:
Listen — Explore music from different genres, cultures, and eras and identify sounds that inspire them.
Sample — Select musical moments and transform them into usable creative material.
Loop — Use repetition to create rhythm, mood, and structure.
Chop — Break samples apart and rearrange them into entirely new patterns and grooves.
Transform — Experiment with tempo, pitch, vocals, and arrangement to reshape the original material.
Remix — Combine their creative decisions into a finished piece of music.
WHAT THEY MAKE
Every student works toward:
A finished remix or original beat using sampled material
A completed digital music project they can share
An optional group listening session or showcase
Students also present their work and explain the creative choices behind what they made.
WHAT THEY LEARN
Sampling & Remix combines technical production skills with musical experimentation and cultural exploration:
Sampling + Digital Production
Students develop foundational DAW skills including looping, chopping, editing, arranging, tempo shifting, pitch manipulation, and basic mixing.
Rhythm + Musical Structure
Students develop an ear for rhythm, melody, texture, and arrangement while learning how individual sounds can be transformed into a complete track.
Culture + Creative Context
Students explore musical traditions ranging from soul and jazz to salsa, African music, classical compositions, and film scores—learning to recognize connections between genres and understand music as an evolving cultural conversation.
Experimentation + Creative Voice
Rather than simply recreating existing music, students make choices about what to keep, change, combine, and reinvent—building confidence through experimentation and developing their own creative perspective.

Sampling & Remix introduces students to creative careers where music, technology, and media intersect, including:

PROFESSIONAL MENTORSHIP
Guest producers, musicians, DJs, and audio professionals can join the Lab to demonstrate their creative process, discuss careers in contemporary music production, and provide feedback on student work. Students see firsthand how experimentation with sound can develop into a professional creative practice.
THE EXPERIENCE
WEEK 1 — DISCOVER
Explore the history and culture of sampling, listen across genres, and create a first loop.
WEEK 2 — LOOP
Find compelling musical moments, manipulate tempo, and begin constructing a beat.
WEEK 3 — CHOP
Slice and rearrange audio to create original rhythms, patterns, and musical ideas.
WEEK 4 — EXPLORE
Sample across musical traditions and examine how culture, history, and sound influence creative choices.
WEEK 5 — REMIX
Introduce vocals, develop arrangements, and learn the fundamentals of balancing a finished track.
WEEK 6 — SHARE
Complete the remix and present the finished work through a group listening session or showcase.
